The failure actually happened about 9 minutes after launch. The third stage failed - not the first stage. Contact wwith the rocket was lost at T+540 seconds. The second and third stages failed to separate and the payload faring didn't release. The rocket itself failed and was not shot down or hit by anything else.All Proton rockets are grounded pending the outcome of the failure investigation and corrective action to the rocket. 12 Proton rockets have failed since December 2010 - three and a half years. That's 4 per year. Not good. |
